Evaluation - (Ruhela Begum)

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products (film openings)?

Sixth Sense (1999)
In this scene Dr. Malcolm and Cole have a therapy session. They play a game where Dr. Malcolm asks Cole things and if he gets it right Cole moves closer to the chair and he has to sit down if he reaches the chair, but if Dr. Malcolm gets them wrong Cole moves near the door and can leave when he reaches it. I thought this would be a good scene to watch as the opening of our main task is a therapy session and this helped me get allot of ideas of the kinds of camera shots to use and where the sound would fit in.

When the scene starts there is no sound. We can then hear the key come trough the door and Cole walks in and the door closes.
There is also dialogue of Dr. Malcolm and Cole speaking
Music starts to play when Dr. Malcolm starts to them wrong. The music is mysterious as the audience thinks that Cole is going to sit down but as soon as Dr. Malcolm gets them wrong the music starts to play which leaves us all confused so the music fits into the scene. In the first picture there is a medium shot used. This is a good shot used to the opening of that scene as it shows who is sitting down (Coles mum and Dr. Malcolm) but also the setting they are in, we can see they are in the living room. In the background we can see that Cole walks in the door and they both look at him which shows they were waiting for him. They have also used a medium shot of Cole and Dr. Malcolm's face. This shows the distance between them which is key to the scene as the closer they get the closer the shot is, but as soon as Dr. Malcolm gets them wrong Cole moves back and as you can see in the last picture Cole is back to where he started. we can also see the expression on Dr. Malcolm's face as the closer Cole gets to the chair Dr. Malcolm starts to smile more as he is getting trough to him but the last picture shows he is confused as he started to get the scenarios wrong.
In this scene they have used close up shot a few times. They have used a close up shot of Coles shoes when he walks closer to the chair to show that Dr. Malcolm is getting them right. The close up shot shows that this is important and a key feature to the scene. They have also used a close up shot of the watch as Dr. Malcolm assumes that Coles dad gave it to him. This shot helps us see that the little boy is wearing a men's watch.  They have also used shot reverse shot to Cole and Dr. Malcolm as they speak to each other.
From this scene we can see that Dr. Malcolm is dressed very smart in a suit and it well groomed. From this i can assume that he has a good job and as it he loos like he takes pride in what he wears and dressed smart he must be of a high status.

Titles

The credits start with two of the production company logo (Hollywood Production and Spy Glass Entertainment); these both fade in and fade out to the next production logo. After the production logo’s the titles begin as they fade in, the first title introduces with who is presenting the film then with a fade in the main actor Bruce Willis is introduced and this last 3 seconds until but slowly fades out. Then it fades into the film title The Sixth Sense and this last for another 3 seconds while it slowly fades out. After that 4 of the other main characters names fade in for 3 seconds each and then two actors at a time come in as they have a smaller part in the film. The titles then do the same transactions bur for; casted by, costume designer, music by, edited by, production designer, director of photography, executive producer, produced by, written and directed by and then it fades into a black screen and then the film starts. Throughout the titles the sound is very mysterious as the film is a psychological horror drama film so it fits in with the genre.

The film that we used as our inspiration was The Sixth Sense. Our film is very similar to The Sixth Sense which is why we thought we would use the way they have created the titles and the music they have used for our film. The Sixth Sense credits start with two of the production company logo (Hollywood Production and Spy Glass Entertainment); these both fade in and fade out to the next production logo. The titles then do the same tractions bur for; casted by, costume designer, music by, edited by, production designer, director of photography, executive producer, produced by, written and directed by and then it fades into a black screen and then the film starts. Throughout the titles the sound is very mysterious as the film is a psychological horror drama film so it fits in with the genre. For our film we have done our titles very similar. We have put our production company at the beginning that we created ourselves. The next title is the production company and the picture company. The next 6 titles are of the main characters of our film, then the next 2 titles are of other people in our film but they do not play a big part so we have put two names on one slide. The next titles are of ; casted by, costume designer, music by, edited by, production designer, director of photography, executive producer, produced by. We added them titles in as The Sixth Sense did too. The font or our titles is very similar to The Sixth Sense as they are in capitals, very simple  and not too big. The background of our titles are black and the colour of our font it also white.  We made sure that our titles fade into each other for the 4 seconds too. The title of the film for The Sixth Sense comes in at the beginning of the film but we put the title of our film at the end as we thought it made more sense.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Hello. I am Ruhela Begum an a level media student at The Howard School and I will be talking about intuitions within our film. This is our production company that we created ourselves. We thought this would be a good production name to use as there is a lot off unusual pictures that go with the name, we did make this picture ourselves so we thought of a name that linked in with the picture. After this we included the production name again but also ‘Dreamland Pictures’ as many films add more than one production company involved. We set this out exactly the same as the sixth sense as we used this film as our template. Hollywood pictures and Spyglass studios would be very appropriate for our film as they produced Sixth Sense which is very similar to our film. A distributor is in charge of marketing of the film, an appropriate distributor would be Bandur Film who are very popular with thrillers. As Bandur Film is a American company, our film will reach a large audience as they are very popular.

What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product? (Ruhela Begum)

YouTube - YouTube was not used too much compared to everything else, but we used YouTube to upload our film so people can see what they think of it but we also had to upload our audience feedback so i could post it on our Blog. We did use YouTube to search for music to use in our film but instead we used a copyright free website.
Blogger - Blogger was used a lot. We used blogger to upload anything that needed to be uploaded for example any tasks out teacher set and anything that needed to be done for our main task e.g 9 frame analysis, shot schedule, shot lost, location shot etc. We also used blogger to look at our classmates work and give any feedback, we also looked at our teachers blog to see what needed to be done and any comments made on our posts.
Photoshop - I used Photoshop to combined pictures together for all my 9 frame analysis. Me and Jodie also created our own production company, when making this we used Photoshop to create the image and put everything together.
Sony Vegas Pro 11 - Sony Vegas was used to edit our film. We used this software because we thought it would be an upgrade for where we used Windows Movie Maker. We thought this program offered a lot more different elements that would look good when putting our film together. Having everything we needed in this one program we thought it was very useful and made it very easy for us to use.
Computer - We used the computer for everything. We used it to assess all the website needed for our task, and all the software's we needed to use. We also used it to save anything that we needed or worked on, any research we did etc.
Nikon Coolpix Camera - The Nikon Coolpix camera is my own camera that we used to film our films. We used this camera as it was high quality. As this was my own camera it made it easier for me to be able to assess anything when i needed from it as it was at home. If i used a school camera then i would have to wait and it would be less convenient

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The character that we were using as a template from The Sixth Sense movie was Dr Malcolm Crowe. From watching the movie and looking at how Dr Malcolm is dressed we created our main character Joe Morgan. We have dressed Joe in smart clothing just like Dr Malcolm. We have made sure that Joe is well groomed to keep up with the high status he is. As out film is more modern than The Sixth Sense, when we dressed Joe we made the clothing more modern as we used a t-shirt instead of a shirt and tighter trousers. The audience will be able to identify the wealth Joe is from the smart clothing and how groomed he is. Dr Malcolm has a very high status, a very good job and a lot of money. We wanted our main character to reflect that with the clothing that Dr Malcolm wears.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

This is a group of teenagers. They are female and male and their ages are between (17-19). Some of these teenagers go to sixth form and some attend university. The majority of these teenagers have a part time job and with the money they earn they all like to do activities together such as go to the cinema, go out to eat etc. They all have their own interests but share many common ones as a group.

Our audience profile for Remembrance would mostly appeal to teenagers and adults (15+). As our film is a drama, mystery thriller the younger years would not be able to watch this as it is not suitable for their age group. Men will mainly be attracted to this film as it is a thriller and has some action scenes in the film and is a thriller which they would enjoy. This film may appeal to women as there is an emotional side to it. This film will be appropriate for teenagers as there is minimal bad language. This will attract teenagers a lot as it is a thriller and teenagers love watching films like this one with a group of friends. is a group of teenagers which who like to watch a wide range off film genres. Our film would appeal to them a lot as it is a thriller which a big group of teens would like to go see together. As our film has an emotional side that will appeal to the girls more but we also the thriller and scary side will appeal to the boys and girls but the boys more.

How did you attract/address your audience?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLB9_o_urao

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the main product?

With our preliminary task we set our film in school. I thought this did not worked well as the setting did not match the genre and story line of our film. You could clearly tell that it was filmed in a school as people kept walking past, there was computers in the background and a lot of people were talking in the background too. In our main task our setting was a lot better. We set our film in a house which went very well with our film and as the house we used was very modern and big, this matched our storyline a lot better and made the audience understand the characters a lot more. As our preliminary was a horror we wanted the actors to wear dull dark clothing to match the genre, but the actors all looked different to one another and put them out of character. The way we dressed our characters in the main film helped the audience understand who was who and what their role was. We dressed both our main characters in smart clothing which put them in character. When watching our main film back I think it will also help the characters understand what is going on in the film a lot better than the preliminary task. In the preliminary task we did not have a lot of dialogue but with the few bits of dialogue we did have the sound was very poor as we were in school and there was a lot of noise in the background and people talking which made it hard for us to understand what was said. Also the camera work was very boring and poor. When we were filming we used the same camera shots which made it very boring to watch but when we were filming the camera was shaking a lot and looked very messy. In the main task we used a variety of shots and the camera work was very clean and the quality was a lot better. In the preliminary task our editing was very messy. We did not know to edit very well so everything looked like it did not go together. With our main task we used a wide range of transactions, music etc. which made our film come together and looked very clean.

Evaluation - Jodie Rider

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products (film openings)?

9 Frame for my film

Our film was inspired by The Sixth Sense. If you look at our other 9 frames you can see what we have wrote about that film. We have chose The Sixth Sense to be our inspired film because they have similar story lines so we decided to make our film similar with the titles. In the Sixth Sense, the film starts off with a Production, so we have started ours off with Apple & Lion Productions, I made a picture to go with this to give it more of a effect. The next shot was off the Production and Pictures, so we done Apple & Lion Productions and Kuva Pictures Presents. The titles come down the page quick and then drop and slide down.  We done this bit different to the Sixth Sense because there titles just come in slowly with nothing going on with them. We done a different so our film would have some unique to it. The next shot was the actors, it started off we the main actors. So first was Joe Morgan who was our main man in our film, next was the therapist which was Amanda Lacey. Then there's 3 more actors that come in separately because they are the other main actors of the film. This is how the Sixth Sense does it. After the main actors have gone through we start to see two actors come together in one shot. This is because these actors are not that important to how the main actors are. These titles still drop down quick and then slowly go down. This happens to all the titles until the last one which is the title of our film which is The Remembrance, this comes in different to the rest of the titles as it is the title of the film we wanted it to stand out to our audience. We make he titles take a while to come in and go through them all but this is because this is how the Sixth Sense was and we wanted to get the same effect with the titles taking a while, this made it tense because you didn't know what to expect, also the music playing made it more mysterious to what was going to happen. In the Sixth Sense they had music playing when the titles came in which we realized made it more tense. We also made the size of the title bigger to show its more important to the rest of the title. From an over all comparison i think we have done well with making our film similar to The Sixth Sense. Our film has its similar points and its differences.

This is a scene from Fifty First dates. Lucy Whitmore which is the girl in this scene and the man who is Marlin Whitmore is the father of this girl. In this scene you get to see what happened in the girls car crash that made her loose her memory, this is why she repeats the same thing everyday because she forgot her memory. This relates to the film we are creating because the man in our film has an car crash and loose his memory also. So i thought this would be good to look at and see what ideas we can get from this, it will be good to see what camera angles and shots are used in this so we know what would be the best for our film.

Because when this scene is happening, it is the past so we are seeing it as someone is telling it. At the start where Marlin looks at Lucy it is silent, they are looking at each other and smiling, showing that they are happy and everything is ok. The third shot you can see above is of Marlin extreme close up on his eyes, we can see that something bad is about to happen because of the shock we see in his eyes and terror. The next shot we see is of a cow. This shot is very quick, 1-2 seconds of seeing this image, from his eyes then straight to this and then straight to the next shot, this shot is a point of view shot. We see what Marlin would be seeing while driving the car, this will put the audience is terror because there is cow in front of his car which he will drive into. Then next shot we see is off Marlin's foot on the foot brake, this shot is very quick, you only see this for 1-2 seconds. Also with this shot we heard skidding to start from the car wheels, which shows the audience that the car is about skid and makes tension happen, makes the audience think what is going to happen next. The next shot you see is Marlin stirring the wheel really fast, as if he as lost control which he is because of the cow in the road. You can see the shock and how scared his by the emotions used. This shot is a median shot view looking at him outside of the car, this shot is good because you can see the character from another point of view, this would be seen as the cows point of view. The next shot is also a quick shot of Lucy looking very gobsmacked with her mouth open, looking surprised as what is about to happen, this shot is at the side would be where her dad would be sitting. This shot was very quick as so were the ones before, this scene happened very quickly because of the car accident you only saw the quick movements that happened.  The shot after that is off he wheel skidding on the floor, you hear this as it happens, this is now starting to build up the tension in the scene. The shot of this is a low shot know as the worms eye view, this looks up to the wheel at the side skidding, this is a good shot because it makes it seem like the wheel is very over powering about what is happening. Then the next shot is where you see the car crashed into a tree, this is a long distance shot so you can see the whole scene and what else is going on, you can see that the car has been smashed and see that the cow is okay and didn't get hit which makes the viewers feel relieved. The scene happened very quick and most of the shots are close up, so you can see every little detail that was going on, there wasn't really any sound because we was watching this from the past as someone was explaining it. I have got ideas from looking at this scene and will use some of the shots used.

What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Media Technology

YouTube - YouTube wasn't something we use that much to do with our film. We used YouTube to research about other films for more research. We used YouTube to see what the Sixth Sense film was like. We used YouTube to upload our film and audience feedback to our blog.We did also use YouTube to find music for our film but we ended up using a copy right free website,
Photoshop - We used Photoshop for our Production Company image. We had a picture of an apple and lion, we put them together on Photoshop as this was the best software to use.
Blogger - We used our blogger a lot through this project. We started off using the blogger for our preliminary task and then our main task. Our blogger is what has everything on it, this is where all our written work goes and our videos. We also used the blogger to look at the other students bloggers in our class so we could get feedback and also get advise from other bloggers. We also used he blogger to look at our teachers blogger for guidance and help.
Nikon Cool-pix Camera - This Nikon Cool-pix camera is Ruhelas. We used this to film our whole film, it was very easy to work and understand. We used this camera as it was high quality and gave as a good picture. We decided not use some from school because if we needed to use outside of school then it would be an issue to get them, it was easier having our own camera. The camera was a big part of our project as it filmed our film. It also filmed our feedback from our class.
Sony Vegas pro 11 - We used Sony Vegas to put our film together. At first we use Windows Movie-Maker, but this software wasn't that good, it didn't have as much technology as Sony Vegas did. Using Sony Vegas was very helpful as it high tech and has many elements that we could use. At first we found it a bit hard to understand how to work the software but then we got use to it.
Computer - We used the computer for mostly everything. The computer is what has all the software's on it, it has the blogger on it too. The computer has all our written work on it that we done on Word Documents, Power points etc. We then would put our work on the blogger which is also on the computer. The computer had the USB plug for us to connect the camera too, which let us put on photos and our video clips.
Speakers - The speakers that were connected to the computer we used to listen to the music we were going to use in our film. The speakers were very handy because we could listen to the music louder so we could understand it better.
PowerPoint/Word Document/Paint - We used PowerPoint, Word Document and Paint for our written work and pictures. I wrote some of my work up on Word Document and then pasted it over onto the blogger. I used the PowerPoint for pictures put together for example the pictures above, i would then save them as a Paint document because it was easier to post as a picture on here.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Audience for Media Product

This is Kal Penn aged 35. He owns a house in North West London. He has a wife and has been married for 5 years with 2 children that are aged 1 and 3 years old. Kal is a very family orientated and loves his family very much. Kal likes to do a lot with his family for example going on trips and taking them to parks. Kal would always put his family first but does like doing stuff with his friends for example going to the Pub, watching football, having snooker nights. Kal's job is a desk job at Halifax. He wears a suit to work everyday when hes workings but is his own leisure time he just wears a casual top and jeans.

Kal likes a few different genres of films. He mostly likes comedy, drama and mysterious films. Kal likes the films The Hangover, Signs, Batman, Grown Ups, The Wolf of Wall Street. Kal likes film with an exciting  story to it. Kal does enjoy watching films and going to the cinema regularly.

I think that Kal fits our target audience very well. Our target audience is Males that are ages from 30-44. Because Kal enjoys films with an mysterious exciting story to it, it i think our film will target his needs and he would enjoy it. Kal Penn is an excellent example to who our film targets too. Our film targets more to males than to females because the role model in the film is a man, and is more of a layed back film which men would enjoy more.

Our film is attracted to men more than woman as it is a very doll film and women like more enthusiastic films. Our film is a mysterious, thriller/drama film. Our target audience is men ages 30-45, and also teenagers.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Representation of social groups

In the Sixth Sense one of the main actors is Bruce Willis, he is known as Dr Malcolm Crowe in the film. When watching the film we can see that Dr Malcolm Crowe is very smart and does his own thing. He walks around as if he is the 'boss' but doesn't have that nasty character to him. We can see he is a wealthy character because of what he wears, he wears suits and long coats which are smart. We can see by what he is wearing that the film isn't an old film, it is a modern film because hes wearing modern clothing. So we done our main actor being Joe, to be like Dr Malcolm Crowe. We made sure that Joe was wearing smart clothing for example, blazer, shirt, and smart shoes. Because the film we made is very modern, Joe would obviously be wearing more modern smart clothing but our audience will know that he is a wealthy man because of what he is wearing. Looking at both characters we can see that the similarities are that they are both wealthy men, do their own thing, and are high class. I think we have represented Joe just how we wanted too, and matches his role model.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the main product?

Progress from preliminary task to main task

The preliminary task we did was to do a short film that followed the brief being ‘A character opens a door, crosses a room and sits down in a chair opposite another character, an exchange of dialogue occurs'. We didn't really follow the brief exactly how it said. You can see in our preliminary task we filmed it in school which isn't that good because we don't have that many options to work with. We only has class rooms and the school site. We also used a school camera to film our preliminary, as you can see the quality of the pictures above aren't that clear. We had objects and chairs in the way that didn't need to be there this is why its not the best choice to film it during school. Also you can see that the actors are all wearing casual clothes, so we did not give them costumes to wear that could suit their character.

Looking at the examples above off our main film you can see the filming quality is much better, this is because we used a higher quality camera for this film. Our brief that we had to follow was 'To do an opening to a film, with credits' which we did follow too. You can see that the actors in our main film have costumes on in the film and also have props. Amanda has smart clothing on because she is a therapist, a smart skirt and heels with a blouse. You cant see what Joe is wearing in the picture but he wears a suit because he is a business, rich man. Props used is Amanda's bag. We filmed our main film at a house, with the outdoors. This was much better filming in one of our houses than filming at school because we had options on where to film and what to use and what was around us. We had the home furniture which made it show that we were filming in a home which we wanted, we got nature involved which is good because there is natural light.

Comparing the two films together too see the progress we have made is very clear and obvious. When we got given the brief to follow for the preliminary task we didn't really follow it that well but comparing this to our main film we followed the brief exactly on point. We have improved with filming, making sure its straight and the quality is much better. We have progressed with the actors, by giving them costumes so you can clearly see what kind of character they are meant to be. The location is much better because we have more options available to us. Overall i think we have improved a lot to do with filming, and everything to do with it. We have progressed a lot.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product? and why?

Looking at the film that we looked at, that inspired us when we were doing our film it was the Sixth Sense. We made our own logo off the apple and lion on Photoshop to make a production logo. We decided to do Apple and lion because we thought this would work together well. The picture we made was eye catching as it wasn't realistic. Looking at what the sixth sense opened with it was Hollywood Pictures, with the logo so that's why we decided to open it was a production company instead. Then you go on to Dreamland Pictures and Apple and lion productions, this is how the sixth sense done it so we decided to do that. We chose tro do dreamland pictures, because many films use more company's that produce the film so we did that too. Then the next shots go on to the actors.

Main Task - Remembrance

Group Roles -

For out main task me (Ruhela) and Jodie both shared the roles equally. When it came to filming we both took turns with the filming the scenes and figuring out what camera shots would work well. After filming we both edited the film together. With editing with we both worked together and chose what transactions looked good, looking for the music and editing the titles. We mainly worked together with this main task.
Ruhela Begum uploaded the film to YouTube and the created this post.

9 Frame Analysis - Fifty First Dates - Jodie Rider

This is a scene from Fifty First dates. Lucy Whitmore which is the girl in this scene and the man who is Marlin Whitmore is the father of this girl. The scene happened very quick and most of the shots are close up, so you can see every little detail that was going on, there wasn't really any sound because we was watching this from the past as someone was explaining it. I have got ideas from looking at this scene and will use some of the shots used.
